An inflammation of the
lining of your bronchial tubes is known as Bronchitis. There are two types of bronchitis 1) acute bronchitis, and 2) chronic
bronchitis.
Acute bronchitis
is defined as a cough lasting five or more days also known as a chest cold, the
cough may linger for weeks. In some cases people with recurrent acute
bronchitis develop chronic bronchitis and a respiratory infection.
Chronic bronchitis is known
to be lasts for at least 3 months, 2 years in a row. It is defined as a cough
that occurs every day with sputum production. Medical attention is required for chronic
bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is one of the conditions included in chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Viral or bacterial
infection are the most common way for infection, due to this people become
infected with or “get” acute bronchitis.
Irritants like tobacco smoke, air pollution, or chemicals are the other
causes.
Symptoms:
Cough is the primary symptom
of acute bronchitis. Other symptoms may include:
Sputum production, Sore
throat, Nasal congestion, Headache, Muscle aches, Fatigue, Shortness of breath,
Children with acute bronchitis may have symptoms of:, A runny nose, Mild fever,
Cough up sputum or vomit mucus. The patient's history, physical exam, and
possibly procedures or tests helps to diagnose acute bronchitis.
Some medications may
relieve bronchitis symptoms, for example, cough suppressants, acetaminophen,
and antibiotics (for bacterial infections only).
The
treatment for acute bronchitis:
The main treatments for
acute bronchitis include bed rest and supportive care such as reducing coughing.
Some medicines can be life-threatening that may cause harmful side effect for
young children. Organ toxicity and death
are the other side effects.
Complications
of acute bronchitis:
Complications may include
a respiratory
infection like pneumonia (viral and/or bacterial), chronic
bronchitis, asthma, and sinusitis. In addition, some complications arise depending
on the pathogen that includes tuberculosis, whooping cough (pertussis), and
other infectious lung diseases.
